MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES, Value addition in the textile industry - Coggle…
MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES
production of goods in large quantities after processing from raw materials to more valuable products.
-
-
INDUSTRIAL LOCATION
-
manufacturing activity tends to locate at the most appropriate place where all the factors of industrial location are either available or can be arranged at lower cost.
-
-
In the pre-independence period, manufacturing units were located in places from the point of overseas trade like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai etc.
there emerged certain pockets of industrially developed urban centres surrounded by a huge agricultural rural hinterland.

-
AGRO BASED INDUSTRIES
Textile Industries
-
It is the only industry in the country, which is self reliant and complete in the value chain i.e. from raw materials to the highest value added products.
Cotton Textile Industry
After 18th century when powerlooms came into use, our traditional industries suffered a setback during the colonial period bc they could not compete with the mill-made cloth from England.
-
-
-
weaving is done by handloom, powerloom and in mills
-
-
our spinning mills are competitive at global level and capable of using all the fibres we produce. the weaving, knitting and processing units cant use much of the high quality yarn that is produced in the country bc it is all exported
Challenges faced
- good quality long staple cotton is still imported
-
- machinery needs to be upgraded in the weaving and processing sectors in particular
-
- stiff competition with the synthetic fibre industry
- catered to the local market
- production is in fragmented small units
Jute Textile Industry
-
Challenges
- stiff competition in the international market
- others competitors like bangladesh, brazil, etc.
-
-
-
Promotion
- the internal demand has been on the increase due to the govt. policy of mandatory use of jute packaging
- the growing global concern for environmental friendly, biodegradable materials, has once again opened the opportunity for jute products
Sugarcane Industry
-
Shift of mills from N--> S and W states, especially maharashtra
-
-
-
Seasonal industry
- seasonal product (agro based)
- runs in off season when sugarcane cultivation is not occuring
- provides seasonal employ.
Cooperative in nature
- done by a group of individuals
- saves cost of setting up the industry individually
- raw material is limited by one farmer
- since this is a seasonal industry, cooperatives help
- output increases and so does the profit
- competition among them reduces
Challenges
- seasonal nature of the industry
- old and inefficient methods of production
- transport delay in reaching cane to factories
- the need to maximise the use of baggase
