Facilitating Effective Discussions

Prepare for an effective discussions
Plan beforehand how you will conduct the discussion. For example by choosing the space and provide food and drinks.
Make sure participants are present and participating in the discussion.
Help group members in the discussion
Set up a ground rule for group members to participate in the discussion for example by staying focused and being open-minded.
Clearly provide the time you have for the discussion.
Encourage group members to state their name before they speak.
Minimize background noise by not letting all participants to speak at the same time.
Slow down when using complicated phrases or words.
Starting an effective discussions
Ask group members which of the questions you handed out are challenging.
Identify important points to start the discussions.
Pair off the group members for question and answering session.
Encourage group members to contribute their ideas and evaluate the ideas provided.
Provide few minutes for group members to write down their answers and ask them to share their answers.
Assign small groups for the group members to discuss
Form a small group to lead an informal debate
Encouraging participation of group members
Provide an inclusive environment that will encourage the group members to stay focused and participate in the discussion.
Let the student to share ideas and opinions anonymously by supplying note cards for them to write their opinions of questions.
Give students low-stakes opportunities to think and discuss content
Assist small discussion with group members before letting them share their opinions or questions to the whole members of the discussion.
Give the members different opportunities to participate.
Ask each members to take turns writing down questions or giving opinions on whiteboards.
Emphasize the value of student responses by restating their comments or writing their ideas on the board.
Let the members to participate by limiting your involvement.
Balance group members' voices
Guide the discussion
Have a clear agenda for the discussion to keep it focused.
Repeat the key point of all comments or questions
Write all key points from the discussion as points to summarize.
Be aware of signs that the discussion in deteriotating once the members are not focused or not listening to each other.
Let group members who have trouble communicating to finish speaking out their ideas or questions.
Remind students of the ground rules for discussion which is to avoid arguments.
Let the members know that the discussion is ending and ask them if there are any final before you pull the ideas together.
Evaluate the discussion
Let the group members write what they gain from the discussion and how it changes their thinking.
Encourage the group members to respond to the questions that are related to the discussion.
