Establish ground rules (the value of listening, being open-minded)
Communicate how much time you have for questions or discussion
Keep background noise to a minimum and ask students to state their name before they begin speaking

Take notes (jot down key points to summarize the discussion)
Prevent the discussion from deteriorating into an argument (remind students of the ground rules for discussion)
Bring closure to the discussion (to ensure that group members leave feeling satisfied that they accomplished something)
Evaluating
Ask students to respond to specific questions about the discussion
Conduct your own informal evaluation of the discussion (Did everyone contribute to the discussion? Did the discussion stay focused?)

Use online resources and content management systems to extend class discussions
