For the Progressive theorist, education is one great, extended experiment for which society is bound to pay. Progressivists believe that individuality, progress, and change are fundamental to one's education. Believing that people learn best from what they consider most relevant to their lives, I believe that I need to center my syllabus on the needs, experiences, interests, and abilities of students.
In each classes, I will try to make each hours interesting and useful by planning lessons that provoke curiosity. I’d love to design and prepare materials for my classes so that students can work on hands-on projects, and eventually learning would take place, rather than memorization. We talk about principle concepts, how to solve the problems and relates them with real world case studies. I want students to learn through action and being involved in the processes that will get to the end product.
And that is how I believe students are actively learning. We are in groups a lot and we actively learn through discussion. The students interact with one another and develop social qualities such as cooperation and tolerance for different points of view. In addition, students solve problems in the classroom similar to those they will encounter in their everyday lives.
Again this models real life, in that students learn to work together to come up with a common solution, rather than having the teacher just tell them the correct answer. This method is a great way for students to learn problem solving and develop critical thinking skills. I believe these are lifelong skills that are important for young adults to be drilled in, and that they will use them for the rest of their lives.
