Matter is any substances that has mass and takes up space. An example of this would be something like a cake. All the ingredients and every part of that cake is matter.

A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture without the same properties throughout. An example of this would be ice water. Although it is the same element throughout, the ice cubes have different properties than the liquid water does.

A pure substance is a form of matter having constant chemical composition. Yet again, and example of this would be a glass of water because the water in the glass is pure water.
A homogeneous mixture is a mixture with the same properties throughout. An example of this would just be a plain old glass of water. Every part of that glass of water has the same properties.

A compound is any substance composed of one or more chemicals. An example of this would be something like a cake because it has a lot of things in it that make it a cake.

An element is any pure substance that cannot be broken down by chemical means. An example of this would be hydrogen, because it cannot be broken down.
