In early society, many social norms were determined by culture. This is why people have different greetings in other countries.

Society
There are many societal influences when it comes to politics. One of which is not wanting to voice your own opinion, and just going along with the pack.
There are countless societal beliefs regarding education. Some people believe that if you don't go to college you will not be successful. This often leads to not being able to find jobs or having trouble sticking with one.
Living in a certain society or community will often influence your personal beliefs. An example of this would be the FLDS Church, this is because they broke off from the Mormon Church when they outlawed polygamy.
