Pathophysiology
autoimmune disease
exact cause is not known - genetics combined w/ hormonal and environmental factors
Type III hypersensitivity reaction
Most commonly in women
Clinical Manifestations
joint pain and swelling
skin rashes
fatigue
pericardial effusion (swelling around the heart)
pleural effusion (swelling around the lungs)
exacerbations and quiescence (decrease symptoms)
