The West
Where?
Geographically not prone for agricultural development due to the Rocky and Pacific Mountains hindering moisture from the area.
The American west was very hard to establish a settlement at first due to dry conditions. It had very little rainfall due to the distance from the ocean. Farming conditions were difficult due to lack of rain.
West of the 100th meridian, which cuts vertically through Texas. It receives little rainfall compared to the eastern US, making farming very difficult, so Anglos were unprepared to settle it.
Mining
When & Where?
Mining began in 1849, when miners arrives in covered wagons, horseback, and on boat to mine in the west.
Mining began in the California gold rush in the west. There were limited resources, so many immigrants and settler miners rushed to the location.
Results
Mercury and uranium dispersed to nearby lakes and contaminated its ecosystems - affecting those living in it and people who used it as food and water reserves.

The Gold Rush funded industrial projects in the future, such as the railroad and expansion of roads.
Who?
For industrial mining after gold was found somewhere (hard rock + hydraulic), immigrants from Europe and Asia as well

For placer mining, middle class Anglos looking to strike it rich
Ranching
When & Where?
Through the West and Texas, since the cattle was brought from Mexico.

Who?
Typically ex-confederates, Mexicans and/or ex-slaves

Boys anything from 15-20 years old, many of them were killed or crippled during the job while organizing and herding the cattle.

Looking to make large amounts of money somehow. Mainly middle class because upper class has little incentive to move and lower class has little means to move.

Settlers used covered wagons to travel to their destinations, this often took months.
