Similie use 'as' or 'like' A figure of speech involving a comparison between unlike things using like, as, or as though. An example: "My love is like a red, red rose."
Metaphor - A comparison between two different things without a comparative word such as like or as. An example is "My love is a red, red rose,"

Symbol - An object or action that means more than itself, that stands for something beyond itself.
Irony - The expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.

Foreshadowing - the author creating hints or clues of an event which is going to develop / occur later on - it builds suspense
Personification - describes objects or abstract nouns in an interesting way by giving them human characteristics. 'The charming cottage sat smiling in the middle of the countryside' / 'Fear crept through the streets'

juxtaposition - a word to describe a particular contrast e.g. 'the juxtaposition between X and Y creates the sense of Z' e.g. the juxtaposition of light against dark emphasises the... e.g. the juxtaposition of two images exaggerates...
