THE CALEDONIAN OROGENY
Geological effects
It separates the two continental blocks, that have sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic rocks, fossils and mineralization.
Uplift, erosion and extensional collapse of the thickened crust of the mountain range led to exposure of deep crustal rocks and deposition of sandstones and conglomerates in basins.
:explode:The main suture zone passes through central Ireland and along the England-Scotland border. :explode:
Collision and extension
:national_park:The last collision was between a northwestern European and a North American--Greenland continent and it gave rise to a mountain range the remnants. :national_park:
It extends in a southwest-northeast direction from Ireland, Wales, England, Greenland-Norway, to Spitsbergen.
:pen:The name "Caledonian" was not an absolute period of geological time, it only applies to a series of tectonically related events. :pen:
:warning:The Caledonian orogeny encompasses events that ocurred roughly 490-390 million years ago. Named after Caledonia, Latin name for Scotland. It surrounds a number of tectonic phases. :warning:
