Organic Labels on non-food items
the usual rule
USDA run test on food
They label if the food is organic or not with a official situation
only products involved in the agricultural industry that contains at least 95% of organic materials can display the organic seal of USDA
What is happening now
non-food products are claiming their stuff are organic
they make the products out of organic material
USDA allow some things like shampoo or face wash to have the organic label
other products that do not meet the standard label their products as organic
Nothing can be done by USDA because it is outside their scope, so departments with more authority have to step in
rights that is violated
right to be informed
wrong information was given by non-food companies, being that their products are labeled "organic" falsely and led to misunderstanding of customers.
right to consumer education
consumers are not being informed the truth about the goods they are buying
responsibilities
The label should be enforced, especially by the FTC, or companies that earn money with their "organic" products will go unpunished
example
a mattress company was investigated by the FTC in 2017 and was found that they labelled their baby mattresses as "organic", although it is made with mostly inorganic products that involve polyurethane, which is a plastic made mostly from petroleum based raw materials.
