The story tells of a young husband and wife and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts for each other with very little money.

In 1955, Parks refused to give up his seat on a public bus in Alabama and pushed for the end of racial segregation in the United States.

It describes a period in the narrator's life of seven years and an old woman who is his distant cousin and best friend. It focuses on country life, friendship, and the joy of giving during the Christmas season.

The story begins with Jerry and his widowed mother on vacation from their native England to a coastal town in an unnamed foreign country.

The story is about a man who fatally took revenge on a friend who, according to him, insulted him.

He speaks of his desire for a future in which people with black and white complexions could coexist harmoniously and as equals.
