Differentiated Strategies For Spelling in Grade 1
Gifted Students (5). These are the students that got all 12 questions correct.
Activity 2: Students will play an online game, via starfall, where they must pick the correct CVCE spelling for a word. They will receive both a visual and auditory clue for the word before making their selection
Activity 1: Students will look at a picture and write the corresponding spelling for the CVC word. Students will then write a sentence using the word
Follow up: Group discussion on the difference between the vowel sound in CVC and CVCE words
General (12) Theses are the students that got between 7 and 11 questions correct
Activity 1: Students will complete a match and write worksheet for CVC words individually. Students will first select the correct spelling for the visual and auditory clue provided. They will then write the word by themselves.
Activity 2: Students will work as a team to use their bodies to spell out the words. I will take pictures of the correct spelling.
Follow up: Students will view the pictures and correct their worksheets using a different color pen. Students will then create a list of words with the different short vowel sounds
Special Needs (2) Down Syndrome
Activity 1: students desk/work space will be covered with whip cream, they will then use their finger of choice to write the letter that the teacher is saying
Activity 2: students will use the proloquo2go app on their ipads to work on their literacy skills and selecting the missing letter from the word that they both see and hear
Follow up: Teacher will work with students individually getting them to say the letters matching the teacher's flashcards
ELL Students (3) These are the students that got less than 7 correct answers on the pre-assessment
Activity 1: Students will be given a worksheet with the 26 different letters on it. I will read out a letter and they will circle the corresponding letter on their paper.
Activity 2: We will repeat activity 1, this time using phonetic pronunciation of the words
Follow up: Students will be given a matching worksheet to complete. They will match pictures with their beginning letter sound. I will record a video of myself reading out the words. The first time with normal pronunciation, the second emphasizing the beginning sound
