CHEMISTRY AND METABOLISM
Atoms, ions, molecules
-
Ion
-
-
Definition: an Ion is an atom that has + or (-) negative charges. This charges are due to loosing an electron or gaining a proton. E.g. Na+, Cl- In this case Sodium Ion loose an electron, so we there is an extra proton. Chloride Ion receives an extra electron. So the negative charge is the charge of the added electron.
-
Ionic, covalent, hydrogen bonds
Ionic bond
Form when two Non-metals are bonded together. This will have full positive and full negative bonds. Ionic compound or molecules dissociates when added in a solution.
Covalent bond
a. polar covalent bond
definition: has poles. Plays the magnet game. Poles sides are not identical. One will attract the other side and the other side will repel. This give rise to a Partial positive & Partial negative sign. Atoms higher electronegativity affects, this. e.g. Oxygen pulls more than the other molecule. so one atom will be closer to the nucleus of oxygen.
-
definition: covalent bond is the strongest among the bonds. E.g. Serine a polar covalent bond, will not dissociate in water. it will remain intact. Covalent Bond is two non-metal element.

Biological molecules, enzymes, ATP
-
enzymes
ends in "ase". Enzyme is a protein. Speed up the process by lowering activation energy. And do nor consume in the process.
