Network interface card
Any computer needs one. Modern computers have these devices built into the motherboard. In some computers you have to add an extra expansion card
Hub
Connects a number of computers together to make a LAN. if it receives a message, it sends it to every computer on the network. Not very secure
Network cable
To connect together different devices to make up a network. Can carry much more data per second, and are more secure.
router
Connects together two or more networks. Common use: join a home or business network (LAN) to the Internet (WAN). Wireless router
Switch
Device that connects a number of computers together to make a LAN. Is at the centre of a star network
Proxy Server
Computer setup to share a resource, usually an Internet connection

Firewall
Device/software placed between your computer and the rest of the network. to protect your whole LAN from hackers out on the Internet, you would place a firewall between the LAN and the Internet connection.

Wide Area Network
- Created by joining several LANs together
- Use quite exotic connections technologies
- Geographically spread over large areas and links between computers

- Private network belonging to an organisation or business.

Internet, Intranet and Extranet
