Types of government
Autocracy
Theocracy
A government where religious laws form the basis for all other laws.The rulers are political and religious leaders, so there is no separation of state.

Pope Francis is considered to be a leader of a Theocracy, as he is the leader of the Roman Catholic church and he has supreme legislative, executive, and judicial power over Vatican City.
Dictatorship
A dictatorship has one dictator, who rules by fear, force, and intimidation and answers to no one.

Oligarchy
A system of government in which a few wealthy individuals or families control decision making either directly or indirectly.

Boris Berezovsky is a Russion olicharch due to extreme wealth and his position as a governmental official, so he greatly influences decisions made by the Russian government.
Junta
Thailand had a military Junta, that ended in 2014. Before then, it was ruled by a group of military officials who governed freely, as they stifled any opposition that arose.

Monarchy

Rulers are only allowed to rule to the extent allowed by a constitution, and the head of state is a king or queen.

There is no law or legally-organized direct opposition telling the monarch what to do, so Rulers have the power to rule their country and citizens freely.

After becoming King, he consolidated his power and began restricting the power of the state officials, which allowed him to govern however he wanted without opposition and turned France into an absolute monarch.

Parliamentary System
Canada has a parliamentary system, so a Prime Minister is elected to act as executive and is directly linked to the legislature.
A legislature appoints the leader of the country usually called the Prime minister, premier, or chancellor. The head of government always has the support of the legislative. The legislature can be called congress, national assembly, parliament, etc.

Presidential System
Heads of Government and Heads of State are elected independent of the legislative branch, and some are purely ceremonial.

The United States has a presidential system, so the president is elected and completely separate from the legislature.
