Group of the periodic table
Group 1 Alkali metals
Lithium,Sodium , potassium
Lithium fizzes as it floats in water , sodium strongly fizzes and potassium busts into flames .Metal hydroxide is produced .
When Alkali metals burn in air they form solid metal oxides.
They act vigorously with the halogens in group 17 to produce halides
Lithium - Derived from the word lithis which is stone in Greek
used in batteries and mendicines .
Sodium- Used in street lamps for an orange glow .It is alloyed with potassium to make material for transferring heat in nuclear reactors.
Potassium - Compounds such as potassium nitrate are used in fertiliser .
Potassium ions are used for control of water content in the blood.
Group 2 Alkali earth metals
Beryllium , magnisium,calcium
Beryllium does not react with oxygen ,water or steam, magnesium , calcium and strontium form metal oxides , Barium is stored in oil to prevent vigorious reaction these metals dont have a strong reaction in water but they it between alkali metals.,
Beryllium= aluminium+silicon+oxygen =mineral called bery.
Eg emerald , used in gemstones and jewellery.
Magnesium-Used in fireworks , mix with other metals to form lightweight alloys .Eg- bicycle frame , green plants need it to make chlorophyll, it is also need in our bodies for , teeth and bones .
Calcium- Derived from the latin word for lime, calx or calcium oxide.Used in baking powder, madicines,in the human body is is used for healthy teeth and bones .
Group 17 halogens
Halogens is greek for salt former
Chlorine - yellow + green poisonous gas . Combination with sodium as rock salt ,Used to kill bacteria in water supply system , it forms HCL.
fluorine is a very reactive element it can react with noble gases (very unreactive) fluorine+water=hydrogen fluoride
Bromine- Red + brown ,poisonous ,strong smelling brown vapour at room temp, extracted from salts in sea ,used with silver in photography (light sensitive)
Group 18 noble gases.
Very unreactive
Helium , neon , argon,krypton,xenon
Helium- Lighter that air , hence used for used to life balloons ,equipment for collecting information for weather, it is mixed with oxygen to help sea divers breath underwater.
Neon - bright red light used in advertising displays
Argon- used in filament wires light bulbs when current flow through tungsten wire in the filament the metal become hot ,if oxygen were present it would react with the hot tungsten and the filament would become thin and break,it is also used in silicon.
krypton- used in lamps that give light of high intensity like in airport landings.
Xenon - used to make bright light , in photography flash gun
