choreographic devices
the beginning-Repetition - Slowly leaning away from him whilst staying connected: there are several versions of this. Emphasises her longing for her past. Highlight - She faces away from him with her legs wrapped back around his thighs and then suddenly drops forward as he catches her by the shoulder and around her waist. The highlight adds to the suspense, as we don't know if he will catch her or not.
prologue-Repetition - Motif of her slowly walking. Suggests this is happening over a period of time.
moving closer-repetition - the section ends with the female dancer sat on the male’s shoulder, repeating the end position of the beginning. This moment is seemingly the same however the slight shift in focus shows how the relationship has progresses (motif development). Highlight - She drops suddenly to the floor, her face skimming inches from it. This enforces the idea of her determinedly being on her own path and adds excitement to the sequence.
flow one-climax - at the end of flow one the music builds and there is more flow and momentum using spiralling actions as he lifts her across his shoulder and spins quickly. This is aided by the music and use of camera to create tension. Contrast - The dancers switch from flowing movements to a very slow revolving movement that corresponds with when the camera cuts to a clear wide shot. The flowing dynamics show a shift in the relationship. By contrasting this with a very slow movement it emphasises this more.
kneeling-contrast - after the momentum and energy of flow one there is a contrasts as kneeling starts with them completely still. The dynamics become softer and there is a clear contrast in pace and energy. This creates a sudden shift, which holds the audience’s attention and draws them in. Repetition - There are many actions initiated by the female dancer where they wrap their arms around each other. The repetition highlights the affectionate and tender moment.
flow two-repetition - repeated action of her opening and closing towards him and away from him. This emphasises her inner turmoil.Climax - The section builds to the main climax with more pace, energy and urgency in the movements. This climax shows the female dancer’s final struggle. Highlight - Right at the start of this section the female dancer is lifted above the male with her body parallel to the floor and her legs extending straight down. The surge in energy correlates to a long string note in the music drawing the audience’s attention to the shift in the relationship.
floor-Highlight - She is pressed suddenly up into the sky above his head before being lowered to the floor. This sudden movement shows the male dancer is leading and also catches the audience’s attention before the final moment. Contrast - There is a clear contrast from the end of Flow Two as they are spinning and then stop suddenly as she rests across his thighs. There is a clear change in intensity and mood and he leads the movement for the first time. The contrast draws our attention to the shift in the relationship
