Venus Thromboembolism (VE)
Causes
Hyper-coagulabilty of the blood; Fibrogen increases by 30% from 12/40 to 60% by 36/40
Venus Stasis; progesterone acts on smooth muscle reducing tone
Injury to the epithelium of blood vessels; increased distention increases risk of trauma
Risk Factors
Smoking
Maternal age >35
Multiparity
Prolonged bed rest / immobilty
Previous VTE or thromophilia
Pelvic or leg trauma
c-section / forceps birth
DM
Pre-eclampsia
Inherited coagulation disorders
Anaemia
Lack of access to antenatal care / geographic isolation
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Blood clot in the lower vein often calf; May partially obstruct vein; +/- inflammation
Clinical Signs
Unilateral oedema of the foot / ankle
Low grade fever
increased calf / thigh circumference
unilateral leg pain
tenderness and redness in leg
pain on dorsiflexion
Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
Blood clot in lung **Most common in postpartum women
Clinical signs
Shortness of breath (dyspnoea)
Acute chest pain
Cyanosis
Hypotension
Sudden onset cough
Tachycardia
Sudden collapse
