Genre and Style
Melodrama
See information here - Melodrama is an exaggerated acting style in which good battles evil, and good always wins. Popular in the 1800s but has been present from Ancient Greece until now (think The Avengers!)

-
Music Hall
Popular in the late 1800s and into the early 1900s, Music Hall was a popular form of variety theatre, featuring light-hearted entertainment and other exciting acts such as a circus and magic. See some examples here

-
Power imbalances; between male and females in a relationship; mental capacity; demonstrated through acting; 'sit down'

-
Justice (related to karma above); revenge, judicial justice;
Isolation - Bella's isolation mentally and physically; not allowed in her own house. Women's 'madness' in the Victorian Era (see Study Guide)
-
Lighting (Nic Mollison)
Gaslights represent the danger lurking, as well as the dimming of the stage showing a key development in the plot.
As discussed in Q and A, the lights were another character
-
-
Lighting was film noir; dim, moody and hazy, representing the murky situation they live in. Film noir has a distinct visual style characterised by low lighting, shadows and darkness. Dramatic shadow patterning and contrasts of light/dark are common, often including use of elements that cast an interesting shadow, such as Venetian blinds.

Acting
Jack (Nathan O'Keefe)
Uptight, rigid, stiff posture. Formal, hands clasped, head held high. Intimidating. O'Keefe showed subtext well. Speech was patronising and talking down to women. Takes up a lot of space and directs others.
Bella (Ksenja Logos)
Timid, small, insecure (despite huge dress). Often seated. Tall spine but internalised. Performed in a childish manner as a product of Jack's intimidation. A stereotype of a woman? Non-confrontational. Easily manipulated by Rough and Jack potentially as a result of her unreality due to gaslighting.
Rough (Eileen Darley)
Played by a female actor; led with the chest; large gesticulations; deepened voice; a rotund physicalisation; props of the cigar and walking stick
A female actor showed a connection between Bella and Rough/revenge, as well as a connection to the ghost of the Barlow Rubies. If it was a male, then Bella would have been saved by yet another man. Indeed, a woman was the hero
