Pathophysiology
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. Inflammation occurs when the opening of the appendix to large intestine is blocked by feces, tumors, parasites, or indigestible substances. The surrounding tissue becomes infected by bacteria in the digestive tract. Pus accumulates, impairing the blood supply, and may cause the appendix to rupture.
