Deductive Reasoning
Involves
- examining a general case
- deducing a general set of rules and principles
- applying the rules to specific cases
Inductive Reasoning
Involves
- taking specific examples
- considering the general principles, rules or cases that caused them
Logicians explore the structure of arguments that preserve truth or allow the optimal extraction of knowledge from evidence
The precision of logic helps philosophers to cope with the subtlety of philosophical problems and the often misleading nature of conversational language
