Definition; a pathophysiologic process that results in the loss of nephrons and a decline in renal function.
Treated by conservative management to prevent or slow the rate of nephron destruction. Renal replacement therapy or transplantation are also common.

All forms of CKD are characterized by a reduction in the GFR, reflecting a corresponding reduction in the number of functioning nephrons.
