" by Carol Ann Duffy (Poem)
Subject: recollection of Duffy’s experience as an immigrant when she was a child.
Title: Originally; tracing back to an initial memory in order to tell the primary look of an altered truth.
Analysis of devices
Symbolism: “Lost a river”; River symbolizes the beginning of life and the origin of birth. Duffy says she loss a river is implying the fact she is assimilated and alienated by her surrounding and she has forgotten her parentage.
Rhetorical question: “Do I only think I lost a river, culture, speech, sense of first place and the right place?”; The use of rhetorical question here is not only intends for the audience, but also Duffy herself. She lists all the “things” she lost after her alienation.
The diction “only” shows two different perspectives of the question, of the audience and of Duffy herself. From the outsiders’ perspective, they believe that Duffy only lived in a new environment and perhaps change her living habit and accent in order to “fit-in”; However, only Duffy knows how much she has sacrificed and abandoned in order to “not being strange”.
Duffy's perspective is representing the immigrants' perspective. The audience (outsider) perspective is the point of view of "local people", people that are grown up in the culture.
Causal Relationship
Rhetorical Question: “Where do you come from? Originally? And I hesitate.”;
Duffy has sacrificed so much that she is now become “nobody”, someone who assimilate her personal traits and spirits to the public, which then loss the sense belonging and individuality. Alienation makes Duffy confuse her origin and feeling rootless. She is afraid of admitting her origin because she did not reserve anything traits or memory of her origin.
Structure: Three stanzas, a shift at the beginning of each stanza

Analysis of devices
Symbolism: The chef in blue shirt and red stripe pants; Symbolize “Uncle Sam”, a classic character that represent the United State. The U.S. is known as a nation of emigration.
Labeling: “The melting pot”; A representational object that refers to a monocultural metaphor for a heterogeneous society becoming more homogeneous. Melting pot is a typical assimilation environment specifically exit in the United States, where people belives that the multi-culture has been "blend'" into each other. However, the truth is that they are actually assmilated instead of blended.
Labeling: “Flood of immigrants” & “Teeming millions”; Shows the great impact of assimilation, in which every immigrants, despite your ethnic or cultural background, must go through the assimilation process forcefully.
Labeling & Diction: “Unassimilated Aliens”; The broth that spoil out from the pot is referring to the immigrants that are not assimilated, or not able to “fit in”. They are called “Aliens”, which has a derogatory sense. Immigrants that are not alike or integrated perhaps will be treated as heterogeneous.
Historical background: 1921, Emergency Immigration Act of 1921 was formulated mainly in response to the large influx of Southern and Eastern Europeans, thus successfully restricting their immigration and that of other "undesirables" into the United States.
