CHILD GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
PRINCIPLES
Growth occurs in two directions which are from above to below (cephalocaudal) and centre to all direction (proximodistal)
Proximodistal
Early development of muscular control of the trunk and arms relative to the hands and fingers.
Cephalocaudal
Gradual change in head size relative to body size during human growth.
Growth and development generally occur at the same
rate but differ from individual to individual
Example: Individual differences are such as temperament, energy level, friendship patterns and parent-child attachment
Growth and development are interrelated. Unhealthy growth can hinder spiritual, emotional and as well as social development.
Example: Children that have stunted growth may face spiritual or emotional problems that can affect their development in life.
Growth of physical structures leads development of
skills and functions
Example: Children will be able to hold the object with the whole hand before using their thumbs and forefinger.
Growth occurs only up to a certain stage, while
development is continuous until death.
Example: Growth usually stops when maturity is attained but we can gain new skills until we die .
