The Necklace
Plot
The story builds up as Mathilde Loisel failed to find herself a rich groom even though she had beauty. (People used to judge women on their beauty and not their social class or finances.) She then married a clerk and lived a humble life. One day, Mr. Loisel got a rare invitation to a party that was for the rich and upper class. He knew that his wife always wanted to experience the rich class.
The rising action (Including the conflict) is when Mathilde starts to cry about her not having proper things to wear, after which her husband spends his savings to buy her an expensive dress. She then tries to look for jewelry to wear for the party. She looks up to her old school-friend for help who got married to a rich man. She borrows a necklace from her friend and wears it to the party. She was immediately accepted at the party and was considered the well-dressed by many of the guests. She really enjoyed the party.
During the climax, she realises that she has lost the necklace on the way back home and tries to search for it everywhere.
The aspect of suspense is where the reader is unsure if Mathilde finds the necklace or not. The suspense breaks when she fails to find it and resorts to get a new one.
The falling action includes Mathilde replacing the necklace with a new one. This had cost her husband her entire life's savings. Her friend did not notice its a different necklace and mathilde felt happy about it. The couple then spent the next 10 years of their life in poverty and hardships even worse than what they endured before. The debt had been payed.
The story ends with a plot twist: The necklace that Mathilde had lost was actually fake and was only worth 500 francs whereas the couple had gone in debt for buying a 36000 franc worth necklace and suffered for over 10 years in debt for trying to replace the lost one. (Many may feel that this is the actual climax)
Genre
Realism
The story seems to be very realistic for the 19th century and these problems faced by the protagonist could be realistic back then.
-
Moral
Gives us the Moral that greed can pay off badly and external ornaments do not enhance your beauty, its your internal beauty of intelligence and emotions that actually matter.
Literary Devices
Irony
The Irony is that even thought Mme. Loisel was very charming and was born in a middle-class family, yet she wasn't able to find an aristocratic groom and was married to an ordinary clerk who was very content with his life.
The second Irony is that the necklace that Mme. Loisel had lost was actually fake and worth 500 francs. The couple tried to replace the lost necklace and bought a 36,000 francs worth neclace and gave it back to her friend. THey were in big debt for the next 10 years only to realise that the necklace was fake.
Symbolism
-
The "Coat" that her husband gives to her after the party (she wishes to run away from the party quickly so that no-one notices the coat and so it doesn't spoil her reputation). The coat symbolises the poverty and the mediocre lifestyle Mathilde is trying to avoid and run away from.
Metaphor
The author uses the term "Drunk with pleasure" for Mme. Loisel at the party when she was extremely happy because of her appearance. This is a metaphor that compares being happy to being drunk.
Paragraphs and Dialogue
The story is divided in different sections; each containing different types: Paragraphs and Dialogue. The first section (before the *) consists of 4 paragraphs. Rest of the story is mostly Dialogue.
There is one point where the dialogue stops and a narrative paragraph starts MID-section. (Page no.3 line number 7)
