Erikson's Theory
Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust
Age Range: Infancy (first year)
The infant is unsure of the world they live in and look towards their primary caregiver for stability and love. This puts the idea that the world is a kind and safe place.
Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
Age Range: 1 to 3 years old
In this stage the child will begin to develop a sense of personal control over physical skills and independence. If the child is supported in their independence, they will be confident they can survive in the world by themselves. If they are not, they will have less faith in their abilities and will be more dependent on others.
Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt
Age Range: 3 to 5 years old
During this stage the child will begin to interact with their peers through preschool and will begin to make decisions. Children will feel a sense of pride and be confident in their ability to lead their peers, however if done incorrectly the child may feel inadequate and experience guilt.
Stage 4: Industry vs. Inferiority
Age Range: 6 to puberty
Children at this stage begin to read and write and develop other skills, if they become confident in their skills, they will reach their full potential, however if they feel inferior with their skills, they may develop feelings of low self esteem.
Stage 5: Identity vs. Role Confusion
Age Range: 10 to 20 years old
During this stage, the person begins to look for ways to fit into society and find the role they want to fill in terms of career, family, etc. The person will either become sure of their role in society and be confident in their identify, if not they may experience identity crisis.
Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation
Age Range: 20's and 30's
In this stage the person begins to open up to others and will form relationships with those outside of their family, this will lead to feelings of love. If they fear commitment and love the person may experience feelings of loneliness, depression and isolation.
Stage 7: Generativity vs. Stagnation
Age Range: 40's and 50's
During this stage the person will give back to the community: they help the younger generation develop, community organizations, essentially playing a small part in a big picture. By failing to give back, one may experience being disconnected from their community.
Stage 8: Ego Integrity vs. Despair
Age Range: 60's until death
During this stage, the person will look back on their life and reflect. If they have lived a good life, they will feel satisfied and wise. If they have regrets in life, one may look back and have feelings of despair and dread.
