MEDICATION
ANTIPSYCHOTICS:
Abiliy (aripiprazole)
Latuda (lurasidone)
Risperdal (risperidone)
Seroquel (quetiapine)
Vraylar (cariprazine)
Zyprexa (olanzapine)
MOOD STABILIZERS:
Depakote (divalproex sodium)
Lithium
Tegretol (carbamazepine)
IMPORTANT ASSESSMENTS
Assess and observe for signs of lithium toxicity (e.g., nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, muscle weakness, tremor, lack of coordination, blurred vision, or ringing in your ears).
Assess for exhaustion
Assess for dehydration.
Assess for suicide precautions.
Assess for safety of client and others.
Necessary labs and imaging.
Assess for substance and medication abuse or addiction.
Assess and determine if symptoms are caused by or exacerbated by use of drugs or alcohol.
Assess and observe for destructive or manipulative behaviors.
Assess for the need of help with ADLs
BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS
Provide structured solitary activities to help patient focus and security.
Redirect violent behavior.
Physical exercise to decrease tension and provide focus.
Minimize escalation of anxiety.
Do not leave client unattended.
Follow your facility’s specific protocol regarding supervision and documentation.
Implement a written “no-suicide” contract.
Encourage client to talk about feelings and emotions
Help patient to improve self-image and confidence
NURSING INTERVENTIONS
Provide frequent high-calorie fluids (e.g., fruit shake, milk).
Provide frequent rest periods to Prevent exhaustion.
Maintain a low level of stimuli ( loud noises, bright light, low-temperature ventilation).
Hold valuables in a hospital safe until rational judgment returns.
Make sure patient is sleeping well.
Remove unnecessary items from room that may be used as a weapons.
Provide activities that do not require concentration or competition such as drawing, and walking.
Administer medications appropriately
PATIENT EDUCATION
Educate patient and family about bipolar manic disorder
Teach client visualization techniques that replace negative images with positive images.
Offer religious counseling as appropriate per client preference and facility protocol
Teach patient the importance of a good hygiene
Teach patient relaxation techniques.
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
A mental illness with elevated mood. A phase of bipolar disorder. It is marked by periods of hyperactivity, euphoria, and delusions. Manic patients experience excessive enthusiasm or obsessions.
