Exploring the special education process at Nido de Aguilas High School
Start with this: the school I work for is private and does not frequently take on students with learning differences. The program called "Learning Lab" is slowly growing, but that mostly focused on non physical learning differences like ADHD or EAL students
We do have a process for struggling students. This can be academically struggling or emotionally.
We are taught by the school to keep an eye out for a number of indicators that a student is struggling
Signs to watch for: Behavior changes, looking overtired, not handing in assignments, not being engaged in class, change in social interaction with peers, change in attire, rapid weight loss or gain, concerns voiced from other students
Action: Be on the lookout fo r these changes and indicators in all students
Talk to the student. Reach out. Have one on one conversation. Talk to them about what you notice and are concerns about.
Reach out to other teachers. Is the student having the same issue in other classes? Start a conversation
Reach out to other adults in the student's life. Ask the parents if they notice struggles or changes. Sports coaches or club leaders are also a good resource.
If the issue/concern continues, start a Student of Conversation (SOC) form to get the Counselors involved
This is where a number of things may happen. A) Counselors take over and update teacher when necessary B) the conversation continues with ALL the adults and the student C) there is a solution to the issue and everyone moves forward D) The student joins Learning Lab
A) Student commits to working with a counselor regularly (only with counselor)
B) student continues to work on long term commitment to goal or change (all adults included for support)
C) The issue is solved and everyone moves forward
D) The student has academic needs that require them to join Learning Lab and have support from a specialist. Teacher will adapt instruction accordingly
E) (The option we don't ever want but may in fact happen) The student has academic or emotional needs that cannot be met by the resources available at Nido so they must find a different school that can support them
Action: Teacher complies and works with support systems to help student!
Action: This depends on what the counselors and other adults in the student's life determine to be next steps. Teacher may be continuously monitoring student or adding new teaching strategies into instruction for student
Action: Apply Strategies to address the issues for 3-4 weeks. Teacher can do #2 and possibly #3 during the 3-4 week period if little or no progress is being made.
We have an awesome team of counselors at Nido HS
In PowerSchool a teacher can look up the counselor of each student. That person would be the first point of contact. Vale and Daniela do half of the 9th grade and half of the 10th grade for academic counseling but 9-12 for social emotional. Lina is 9-12 depending on the issue.
