his work consists of 8 comedies - the best are - campaspe, endymion, and gallathea
these were prepared for the not so much for the performance at the court but for the langauage - the wits, point, ingenuity and the grace of a dialogue
gave comedy an intellectual tone - continual use of puns, conceits and all sorts of verbal firework - shakespeare early comedies are very much influence with lyly's style - love's labour's lost and the midsummer night's dream
also from lyly, shakespeare also learnt how to combine courtly plot w episodes of rustic blunders and clownish fooling
