        The Buddha preeched his first sermon to five friends who were with him during his wonderings. In it he laid out the four main ideas that he had come to understand. The Four Noble Truths.

        The cause of all suffering is people selfish desire for the temporary pleasures of this world
        
        The way to end all suffering is to end all desires
        
        Life is filled with suffering and sorrow
        
        The way to overcome such desires and attain enlightenment is to follow the Eightfold Path, which is called the Middle Way between desires and self-denial

        Once the Buddhists follow the Eightfold Path, they will reach nirvana, the Buddha's word or release from selfishness and pain

        Why is the eightfold path called the middle way?
        
        The five disciples who heard the Buddha's first sermon were the first monks admitted to sangha, or Buddhist religious order
        
        Because of The Buddha's rejection to the caste system, many of the Buddha's first followers were laborers and craftspeople
        
        Why would Buddhism appeal to laborers and craftspeople?
        
        Caste system: Division of people by social status. It affects what someone could eat, how the dressed, who they could associate with, personal cleanliness

        Another way of spreding the Buddha's words was through trade
        
        Why is there a link between trade and religion?
        
        Along with their products traders brought the word of the Buddha to make Buddhism the most widespread religion of East Asia

  - - - How do Hindus view the state of human life?
    - - Moksha is also a belief in Jainism. Jainism is similar to Hinduism but they do not have rituals. Jains avoid harming any living creatures. They don't tolerate violence. Most are vegetarians. They believe greed, gossip, prejudice, and anger can prevent a person from achieving moksha.
        
        Hindus and Jains both strive to obtain Moksha. To obtain Moksha they need to be a good person in every aspect of their life. This will gain them good karma and will be reincarnated to something good in their next life.
        
        How does Hinduism and Jainism encourage moral conduct?
      - Reincarnation is the process of being reborn over and over again until Moksha is obtained.
        
        Can everyone obtain Moksha?
      - 3 paths to Monksha
    - - Hinduism can not be traced back to one founder or one set of ideas. Hindu teachers tried to translated Vedic hymns. The teacher's translations were called Upanishads. The Upanishads divides into Atman and Brahman. Atman is the soul of a living being and Brahman is the world soul that contains and unites all atmans.

      - In what ways were the torah and the vedas similar?
        
        Vedas= sacred literatures, prayers ,teaching, rituals, etc
        
        Torah = first 5 books of old testament (Hebrew bible) -> most sacred writings

        Unlike other groups that were polytheists, the Israelites were monotheists which means that they belived in only one god, this was what it can be called a tradition.

        How might their monotheism have caused problems for the Hebrews? 1st people to be monotheists,everyone around them = polytheist, Romans did not like them and their monotheism,nobody believed in their god because they had multiple gods
        
        Moses was a lucky man that survived to the command of Egyptian pharaoh of killing all the male babies because he felt
        threatened by the number of Israelites in Egypt. He ended up being the man that would free the Israelites of slavery this even was called The exodus. this even is rembered every year during the festival of Passover.
        
        Moses was also the man that received the two stone tablets which in God had written down the ten commandments, and he was the one that delivered to his people and this became the
        basis for the civil and religious laws of Judaism.
        
        What advantages were there from Canaan’s position as a cultural crossroads?
        advantages = right on the Mediterranean = good trading and traveling spot. - big influence on western culture. - expanded Judaism
        disadvantages = wars were common because fights among emporers all around them - Romans did not like them
        
        How would you compare the roles of judges and prophets in Israelite society?
        Judeges- Bible says God raised up judges. -> to unit tribes, provide military leadership during a problem
        prophets = taught Hebrews to worship God and live in peace w/ eachother. = moral conduct + right way of living.
