At this point students should be assessed and referred to a specialist depending on the results of the assessment. Assessments vary by school or institution
- For example, a school may have a MTSS team (Multi-tiered Support System) which involves the collaborative team of teachers, parents, and special education specialist.

Parents
Inform (recruit) parents using the following strategies:
- Give clear and descriptive Examples of the Student's behaviors
- Remember that this is not 'good news' for the parents.
- use empathy and compassion
- consistently update parents on changes in performance or behavior

Implement differentiation strategies before proceeding to ensure that the student doesn't have learning differences.
Behavior
Does the student display the following behaviors?
- sleeping in class
- difficulty following instructions
- consistently tardy to class
- lack of eye contact
- fixation on objects or subjects
- lack of focus
- uncontrollable outburst
- easily becoming frustrated
- low self esteem
Performance
Does the student display the following characteristics?
- difficulty with gradually progressing over time
- retention of information
