Step 2: I record evidence of this struggle over a couple of weeks while I also search for ways to immediately help the student (more, and more effective scaffolding, online study tools, graphic organizers, font changes, strategies for holding attention, etc.)
Step 3: I notify the head of school of my concerns and discuss a preliminary plan with him. Other teachers are also linked in to communication so we can compare experiences and share plans.
Step 4: I also have an informal conversation with the student's parents (in person or through email) to let them know what I've noticed (with no labels or anticipatory diagnosis)
Step 5: I implement any strategies that make sense and record evidence of whether or not the strategies increase student learning and achievement.
Step 6: If the strategies are successful for the student, we continue to use them. If they become unsuccessful at a future point, we move to Step 6.1
Step 6.1: If the strategies aren't successful enough, we ask the parents for permission to have their child meet with the school learning specialist for an informal assessment and recommendation.
Step 7: We follow the recommendations of the learning specialist regarding strategies, accommodations, and further evaluation by external specialists.
