Chimpanzees & Language
Gua, an infant chimpanzee was able to understand 100 words but did not produce any (Luella & Kellog, 1930s).
Viki was trained to shape her mouth as she produces sounds and eventually she managed to produce poorly articulated words (Catherine & Hayes, 1940s).
Apes & gorillas, like chimpanzees, communicate with a wide range of vocal calls but they cannot make human speech sounds.
Washoe was trained to use sign language and eventually in 3 & a half years, she was able to combine forms to produce sentences (Beatrix & Gardner).
