People who are, unfortunately, less privileged than I am

I’ve lived in a suburb of Fremont since I was 5 years old. Every memory I have is surrounded by the people of Fremont because my elementary and middle school was filled with children and teachers from here. We are largely all middle-upper class and Asian so I’ve always felt like I fit in and they taught me to be respectful, hardworking, and mindful of myself.

Soccer has been my favorite sport since I was in 5th grade. There are always ups and downs with my injuries but I’ve never felt more passionate about a hobby of mine. I love the way it feels to accomplish something with my own hard work, sweat, and determination. It’s also taught me to be a team player, accepting, understanding, and a good sport.

My parents are a huge part of who I am. My parents are both very loving and compassionate. They are very hardworking and they are my role models. They always want the best for me and have taught me to be forgiving, tolerant, and generous. They taught me a lot about my culture and also instilled values of always putting family first and being kind in me.

My grandfather is very loving and jolly. I love being around him and talking to him. He has taught me a lot about my religion and took care of me while I was a baby and my parents were at work. I feel a strong connection to him, respect him a lot, and am more grateful about things because of him.

My grandmother’s poor health and old age have shaped me to be very compassionate and patient. She’s had multiple strokes so now we have to do everything for her. I help my grandpa and siblings change her diaper and shower her and feed her.

My religion focuses on non-violence. It has shaped me to be very passive and against any type of violence whether it be in speech, thought, or action.

Where I go to school and went to school influenced my morality because I grew up with strict teachers and a very judgy group of kids. School taught me about growing up and change. People judged me without even really knowing who I was so I learned to watch the little things I do because they say a lot about me even if I didn’t think they would. Also, I made friends and lost friends and grew from my experiences.

People who are, unfortunately, less privileged than I am have affected me and the way I act. I learned, as I grew older, that there are very many people who are less privileged than me—whether it be people who don’t always have food at home or can’t afford private school or have to take buses to school because they don’t have a car. It showed me that there are many things that I should be grateful for.

Tv shows/movies I watch have a great influence on who I am. They teach me different values and a lot about different cultures. I also learned about privilege, different stereotypes, and slang.

My friends are all the better parts of me. They’re supportive and kind and funny. They’re everything I could ask for me and always make me happier. They help me grow, be my best self, and feel absolutely comfortable with who I am. They bring out my adventurous side and I am happiest when I am with them.
