STUDENT
Step 1: Teachers observe the student in class and through peer to peer interactions.
a. Determine and record what behaviours the student is exhibiting. For example:
Problems staying organized.
Trouble telling time.
Clumsiness.
Trouble following directions.
Problems with rreading/ writing
Problems with Math
Problems paying attention
Step 2: Teachers meet to discuss their obervations and concerns for the student.
The Teachers work along with the special education teacher to discuss any indicators that they may have observed. symptoms are then prioritized based on the frequency of occurences and recorded on an evaluation form.
Step 3: Have a conference with the student's parents to discuss the teachers' observations and concerns. Ask the parent to take their child to their physician for an informal assessment.
The parent takes the record of the teacher's concerns and observations to the physician. The physician is then able to write a referral to the Bermuda Department of Chid and Family Services, or to an oversees facility that can provide a comprehensive evaluation.
Step 4: The student is assessed and evaluated.
The student is put through a series of tests based on the concerns of the teachers and physician. Once evaluated, the specialist gives a diagnosis and recommendations to the parents, including an Individualized Education Plan for teachers. The Plan is then sent to the school to preview.
Step 5 : Discuss and plan to implement the recommended IEP
The teachers meet to discuss the assessment recommendations and design an Individualized Education Plan fo that student that includes clear objectives and benchmarks toward that student's success. The plan is then shared with the parents.
Step 6:The student receives the necessary services and accomodations.
The IEP is implemented, and the teachers meet frequesntly to discuss what works and eliminate what does not work for the student. The IEP is re-written accordingly and all changes are discussed with the parents.
