Muscular and Skeletal System
Functions of skeletal system
Supports the body
Stores fat and minerals
Supporting movement
Hematopoiesis
Protects internal organs
Ligaments
The main function of ligaments is to hold structures together and keeping them stable, preventing them from twisting, tearing and bending.
Joints in the body
Amphiarthosis (slightly movable)
The joints that fall into this category include: the pubic symphysis of the pelvis and the head of the femur.
Diarthrosis (freely movable)
The joints that fall into this category include: the ball and socket joint, the hinge joint, the condyloid joint, the pivot joint, the gliding joint and the saddle joint.
Synarthrosis (immovable)
The joints that fall into this category include: the skull bones surrounding the brain and the junction between the first pair of ribs and the torso.
Muscle tissues
Skeletal muscle tissue
This type of muscle tissue is located between the bones. It attaches to bones and moves them by contracting as a reaction to the compulsory messages sent by the nervous system. It is responsible for stabilizing joints and bones, controlling internal movement, generating heat and maintaining posture.
Smooth muscle tissue
This type of muscle tissue is located in the walls of hollow organs such as the stomach and intestines. They have various functions, such as pushing food through the body, controlling and maintaining the flow of oxygen and the blood pressure across the whole body.
Cardiac muscle tissue
This type of muscle tissue is located in the heart. It works to keep the heart pumping through reflexive movements. It also controls the contractions of the heart.
