Civil & Structure Project Supervision
Part 4
Requirements for concrete
concrete grade
cement content
consistency
Chloride content
Sulphate content
Sampling and testing plan
One sample per 10.0 m3 or every group of 10 batches for critical structures
One sample per 20.0m3 or every group of 20
batches e.g. slabs, beams
One sample per 50.0 m3 or every group of 50
batches e.g. raft foundation and mass concrete.
One cube from each sample batch shall be tested
for the seven (7) days compressive strength.
Production of Concrete – Site Mixed Concrete
The total amount of water added to the mix shall be
recorded.
The water content of each batch of
concrete may be adjusted
The mixer shall be thoroughly cleaned before
changing from one type of cement to another
The quantities of cement, fine aggregate and various sizes of coarse aggregate shall be measured by weight
Production of Concrete – Ready Mixed Concrete
▫ the details of mix proportions by weight,
▫ the grade of concrete,
▫ type and size of aggregate,
▫ date and time of loading at plant,
▫ type and dosage of chemical admixtures and
▫ other relevant production details in suitable format,
Rejected concrete shall be removed from the Site.
No extra water or admixtures are allowed
Production of Concrete –
Transportation
Concrete shall be transported from the mixer to the formwork as rapidly
It shall be deposited as near as practicable in its final position
The concrete shall be conveyed by chutes
Production of Concrete
– Placing
batch shall be placed and compacted within two (2) hour
All formwork and reinforcement contained in it shall be clean and free
Fresh concrete shall not be placed against in-situ
concrete
Production of Concrete
Compaction
The vibration shall be such that there will be no excess
water on the top surface on completion of compaction
Concrete shall not be subjected to any disturbance within 24 hours after compaction.
Production of Concrete - Curing
▫ Premature drying out from direct sunlight and wind.
Impact damage such as shock, overloading or
falling earth which may disrupt the concrete and
interface with its bond to reinforcements.
