Starting Stimulus
Ted Talk - Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator
Ted talk on the reasons why people are likely to procrastinate. Speaker effectively explains procrastination : by pulling apart the working of the brain.
Main Improvisation: Control centre of the brain gets over run by the monkeys. The set up is similar to Inside Out (Pixar Movie).
We used lighting in this improvisation to explore the absurdist nature of this presentation and heighten the chaos when the monkeys invaded. This early incorporation of technology was good but for future reference lighting design and to be furthered to develop it beyond the mundane.
Interesting experimentation of the use and incorporation of technology.
It was interesting how we were able to explore an issue by minimising the problem - looking at it through the functions of the brain. Looking at human experience in its rawest form will be interesting.
Exploration of a unique and nuanced social idea.
Through this stimulus we were also able to experiment the incorporation of multimedia. We experimented incorporating the video into the performance and altered it so we just had the audio - analysing the difference.
The Scream - Edvard Munch
Expressionist painting depicting a figure screaming as the sun sets.
"An infinite scream passing through nature."
Main Improvisation: Explored the silent screams of individuals. Drawing upon how the painting only depicts one individual screaming whilst a couple seems to be walking unaware we decided to explore the isolation of grief.
We explored the complete and overwhelming impacts of grief through a series of grotesque and visceral physical movements. We wanted to explore how through silence and explicit conduction of the body a distressing and confronting message can be developed.
Effective experimentation of physical theatre and the use of multiple bodies in the space.
Interview with Elderly Man
An interview conducted by a news source on the isolation felt by the elderly. In the interview the man explains how he due to his age feels neglected by the world around him.
Main Improvisation: We experimented in verbatim theatre in which we took key quotes from the interview and implemented them into our work. We alternated between strictly using the interview and using a mix between self-devised dialogue and quotes.
This improvisation helped to illustrate the vulnerability of the elderly to us. Typically we try to target audience members of similar age groups however this stimulus presented us with a target group that we might further want to explore.
The use of direct quotes highlighted the power of using verbatim. Whilst emotive speeches can be impactful knowing that an individual produced these words I believe serves to further heighten the emotive impact.
