Supervisor meeting - 25th August 2020
Bath visit
CBM recording
Is there a MoLA or HE standard of CBM recording?
discussed recording systems used by McComish and Warry
Must finish recording guide and send to supervisors
Noted similarity of Peacock's F2 Classis Britannica CBM to material seen at Bath, and limitations of petrography when applied to provenance of sedimentary materials without distinctive igneous or metamorphic rocks
This implies that there may be mistaken identification of imported fabrics in Roman CBM, given that distinctions are often made on the basis of the same set of frequently occuring tempers, e.g. silty bands, Fe oxide nodules, quartz sand
F23 and its presence in Roman Bath temple precinct
Also noted resemblance to fabrics described by Darvill in Gloucester stamped tiles
Is Betts interpretation of importation to Bath from London correct?
My fabric analyses system
Create decision trees and send to supervisors
Must reintegrate with Betts and Fosters schemes later on
Trial decision trees on previously unstudied material from York Street vaults
If new fabrics are found this will serve to make or break system
Marble analyses
Discussed that analyses now complete although report needs to be assembled
Conclusion that the two pops are distinct, but whether this is due to corrosion or material difference is unclear
It is also unclear what this difference means archaeologically; are they stone from different beds of the same quarry, from different quarries of the same stone or different stone entirely?
Need to get underway with RtR form to get back on campus
Kate wants to talk about it, but should I get it started before this?
Mark and Derek present, Kate on leave
Next meeting on wednesday at 1pm
