Qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research
Qualitative research
-
Main characteristics
-
-
-
Insider meaning (opinions, experiences and feelings of individuals)
-
-
Strengths
Exploratory nature, making sense of complexity, reaching a fuller understanding, broadening to possible interpretations, longitudinal examination of dynamic phenomena, flexibility when things go wrong and rich material for the research report
Weaknesses
Sample size and generalizability, research role, lack of methodological rigour, too complex or too narrow theories, time-consuming and labor-intense
Mixed methods research
Weaknesses
Lack of methodological skills in researchers, can be counterproductive mixing methods when there are doubts and there is no proof that there is a principled approach to guide the variety of combinations
Strengths
Increasing the strengths while eliminating the weaknesses, multi-level analysis of complex issues, improved validity and reaching multiple audiences
Main characteristics
Combination of qualitative and quantitative methods within a single research problem, these principles can also be combined at the data analysis stage
involves
Different combinations of quantitative and qualitative research either at the data collection or at the analysis levels
-
Quantitative research
-
-
Strengths
Systematic, rigorous, focused and tightly, controlled, involving precise measurement and producing reliable and replicable data that is generalizable
Weaknesses
Average out the responses and is generally not very sensitive in uncovering the reasons for particular observations
