Exercises
Look at your documents and think about what metadata fields you would use to gather control over your documents. Fill out a survey of commonly used fields to see how your compare with other editors.
Develop a plan for organizing your texts, whether for print or digital publication. Write it up in a paragraph and post.
Interviews
An editor who uses TEI to collect metadata and can explain how encoding works for organizing/searching/selecting documents.

Discussion Questions
Look at the Library of Congress subject terms for the topic of your material and the index for a related historical monograph. Which provides a more useful model for developing subject terms for your materials? Is there a happy medium?
In the metadata exercise did you need fields that were not listed on the survey? If so, what were they and how do you see them functioning in your edition?
