Course Goals
Plan standards-based writing lessons and writing-to-learn instructional practices that build K-6 students’ academic literacy across various content areas.
Implement culturally responsive pedagogy that builds upon strengths of diverse writers while fostering higher-level writing processes.
Design writing instruction aligned with appropriate academic standards, district’s organized plans of instruction, and the individual needs of students.
Assess a K-6 student’s written language and plan corresponding instructional goals, based upon the child’s identified developmental strengths and needs.
Plan differentiated spelling instruction for K-6 writers in various stages of orthographic development
Articulate effective methods for developing grammatical, syntactical, and semantic knowledge among diverse K-6 students.
Apply principles for offering effective feedback to diverse K-6 writers and their families in ways that foster respectful, collaborative interactions with parents and nurturing classroom instruction with their children.
Articulate the pedagogical content knowledge that informs effective writing instruction, including sociolinguistic knowledge about the relationship between writing, speaking, and drawing as symbolic systems and the sociocultural processes through which children develop writing habits of mind.
Evaluate personal writing performance and access the professional development options necessary to improve that performance.
Course Description
This course focuses on components of K -6 developmental writing programs that develop 21st century writing abilities for diverse learners.
Topics include professional knowledge of writing as a sociolinguistic process, with application to lesson design, assessment methods, and effective feedback that build upon K-6 students' strengths and needs. Teacher candidates implement these practices in the co-requisite field experience.
