Wrist joint - Coggle Diagram
Wrist joint
Ligaments
Palmar radiocarpal ligaments - from radius to the two rows of carpals (allow the hand to follow in supination)
Dorsal radiocarpal ligaments (same direction as palmar radiocarpal ligaments - allow hand to move with pronation)
-
-
Movement and muscles
Flexion
Flexor carpi radialis and flexor carpi ulnaris
(assistance from flexors of fingers and thumb, palmaris longus and abductor pollicis longus)
Extension
Extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor carpi radialis brevis and extensor carpi ulnaris
(assistance from extensors of fingers and thumb)
Abduction
Abductor pollicis longus, flexor carpi radialis, extensor carpi radialis longus and extensor carpi radialis brevis
-
-
Articulation
-
Distal end of the radius and the articular disc of the distal radio-ulnar joint articulate with the proximal row of carpal bones (except the pisiform)
Pisiform acts as sesamoid bone - increases leverage of flexor carpi ulnaris - is anterior to the other carpal bones
Joint capsule
Fibrous layer of the joint capsule attaches to the distal ends of radius and ulna and proximal row of carpals
-
-
Innervation
Derived from the anterior interosseous branch of the median nerve, the posterior interosseous branch of the radial nerve and the dorsal and deep branches of the ulnar nerve
