Sense of Hearing
External Ear
Auricle (pinna)
- Elastic cartilage
- Petrous part of
temporal bone
- keratinized stratified
squamous epithelium
-
-
Middle Ear
-
Auditory ossicles
- Malleus (M)
- Incus (I)
- Stapes (S)
Muscles
- Stapedius (Sd)
- Tensor tympani (Tt)
-
-
Inner Ear
- ocated within the petrous
part of the temporal bone
- 2 part
• A bony labyrinth: cavity
• A membranous labyrinth:
membrane-lined & fluid-filled tubes
contain receptors
- equilibrium
- hearing
The bony labyrinth
three distinct regions
- Vestibule: contains utricle
and saccule
- semicircular canals:
contain semicircular duct.
- Cochlea : contains cochlear duct
The Membranous Labyrinth
-
Cochlear Duct (hearing)
- is the membranous labyrinth house
within the cochlea
- Contain spiral organ
- Roof: vestibular membrane
- Floor: basilar membrane
- 2 chamber on the either side of
cochlea duct
○ superior chamber : scala vestibuli
○ inferior chamber : scala tympani
(a) A Sectioned cochlea.
(b) A magnified view of the cochlea.
Spiral Organ/ organ of Corti
- is a thick sensory epithelium.
- consist of both hair cells and supporting cells.
- rests on the basilar membrane.
(a) Hair cells rest on the basilar membrane of
the spiral organ in the cochlear duct.
(b) Light micrograph of the spiral organ.
Auditory Pathway
- The auditory nerve pathway extends into the
medulla oblongata, proceeds through the
midbrain to the thalamus, and passes into the
auditory cortex of the cerebrum.
