Concepts of Democracy
A belief in the Equality of all People
Equality of opportunity
Definition: All persons have the same chance in life to succeed.
Same pay as someone who would say have a different skin colour or gender.
Equality before the Law
Definition: The judicial process doesn't see race, gender, financial status, etc.
A judge or jury can sentence you or convict you if it is racially motivated.
Definition: All persons are equal no matter their race, gender, nationality, etc.
A belief in the fundamental worth of the individual
Definition: Everyone has value.Everyone's opinion matter, and their voices need to be heard.
Voting, press conferences, protests.
An Acceptance of Majority Rule With Respect for the Rights of the Minority
Definition: The majority rules, the majority should be right. But the minority has the right to be heard. The minority can become the majority of they are right.
Civil Rights movement, Black Lives Matter Movement.
An Insistence on the Widest Amount of Freedom Possible
Definition: We insist the widest amount of freedom until it overlaps with someone else's freedom. It's the split between the rights of an individual and society. Like health, safety, welfare, and morals.
Abortion is a good example of this concept. A part of society frowns upon the right for abortion yet there are many people who believe it infringes on their individual rights.
The Necessity of Compromise in Decision-Making
Definition: All sides must have a chance to be heard and considered when making a decision. All opinions matter. The government must hear the opinion from all parties concerned.
Right now in the United States everyone is voicing their their opinions about the BLM movement. Many people believe they're not being heard. Having to go through the Senate to have their voices be heard is the process they're using..
