The Indian Wars
Apaches/ Geronimo 1885- They raided large areas. Additionally, the Comanche had 1000 warriors that refused to go onto reservations.Over 3000 US troops chased them for over a year until the Comanche gave up.
The Ghost Dance was a religious movement among Plains Indian tribes. They believed that performing these Ghost Dances would make the white man go away and the bison return. They also wore shirts with symbols that the shamans claimed would stop bullets.
Chief Joseph was a New Perce tribe leader that led 800 women and children to escape US territory into Canada. This was over 1300 miles through the Rocky Mountains; however, the US army caught them 50 miles from the Canadian border.
The Battle of the Little Bighorn (1876): led by general Custer in the Dakota territory resulting in a defeat of U.S. forces. One of the rare instances of united tribes. Custer took the fight due to his ego and desire for a big victory to help him get into politics.
The massacre at Wounded Knee (1890) was a botched attempt to disarm the Lakota camp where Sioux men, women, and children were heading following a treaty with the government. U.S. militia responded to the resistance, killing more than 200 people.

American Indians (especially in the west) lived as nomads, following and hunting the bison herds where they went. Thus, they didn't have Western concepts of land ownership; as they didn't stay on the same plot of land, it wasn't meaningful to talk about owning it.
Matrilineal Family - Decent of the family comes from the mother, not the father. The father would often not have much say in how a child was raised
Polytheism - The native Americans worshipped many gods as opposed to a single god as in the Christian faith
