- - - - When a volcano erupts, large volumes of carbon dioxide, water vapor, sulfur dioxide and dust and ash is released. Sulfur dioxide mixed with dust and ash reflects the solar energy back into space thus giving a cooling influence on regional and global temperatures. However, once volcanic dust and ash settles, the global temperatures go back up.
  - - - An example of a volcanic eruption leading to climate change is the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991. The eruption released 17 million tonnes of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. The sulfur dioxide reflected some solar energy back into space, this thus cooled and lowered temperatures in the north hemisphere by as much as 0.6 degrees.
