Pre-Assessment for Grade 3
Ecosystems
All students will be preassessed using KWL sheets. These will serve as a pre-assessment check by asking what students know about the subject as well as what they are interested in learning about.
Differentiations for Special Needs and ELLs
Visual Impairment consideration
Can respond verbally and are free to record class so they may review other students answers
English Language Learners
Short prompts that allows students to express themselves with language they are comfortable with
Dictionaries are available in the classroom to help students who don't know the meaning of the subject word
KWL sheets can easily be differentiated for all kinds of learners because it is allowing them to share their knowledge using simple one-word directions.
All students will be assessed with Quizlet Unit Vocabulary Quizzes that will assess their knowledge and identify difficult words and concepts.
Differentiations for Special Needs and ELLs
The Quizlet website is a wonderful tool for making assessments, especially for students of special needs. Quizlet allows for the easy addition of pictures and audio notes into each vocabulary flashcard. Students with Language processing disorder or visual impairments greatly benefit from these capabilites. They games associated with the cards provide for students who need continual practice to improve and help to keep their attention with a leaderboard that challenges them to improve.
English Language Learners
Visual representations of cards and auto-translation through the quizlet site give ELLs tons of support.
Audio/Visual Impairment considerations
Quizlet allows for the easy addition of pictures and audio notes into each vocabulary flashcard. Students with Language processing disorder or visual impairments greatly benefit from these capabilites.
Differentiating for students of different levels of understanding
Group 2 (12 Students)
These students gave basic answers when describing what they knew and require more in-depth information on ecosystems. Specifically how weather and rainfall influence life in these ecosystems
Reinforcement and expanding on what they know will be the focus for this group. They will read a chapter in their book describing a number of ecosystems and their components. Once they have finished they will be asked to write as many facts that they have learned about ecosystems onto sticky notes that will be placed on a chart and reviewed as a class.
Group 3 (5 Students)
Students struggling with language (3 students)
These students raised their hands often when writing their responses. The clearly lack the vocabulary skills necessary to express themselves in writing.
These students have low reading abilities and we will continue to work on their abilities as we continue with the school year. For now they will watch a video explaining ecosystems and will take notes with key phrases or ideas they heard from the video. The pictures will help by explaining things in a way that doesn't require an extensive vocabulary. Once they have completed that they will work directly with the teacher to review the key information from the video that explained the basic facts of ecosystems.

Students with little to no comprehension (2 students)
These students left their KWL sheets blank and did not seem to understand what the topic even was.
These students are starting from zero so they will read a short fact sheet on ecosystems that goes over what they are and what they are comprised of. Once they've done that, they will watch the video and check off any important information as they hear it. They will also add an additional 4 facts that they learned to the sheet. Once this is done, they will share their facts with the teacher and do a new KWL sheet that explores what they want to learn now. Next time, or for homework, they can attempt one of the project that the other groups did!
Group 1 (5 Students)
These students understood most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment topics and gave examples of what they know that show they have a good grasp on the content
Using what they know already, these students will be challenged by allowing them to teach the class about the aspects of ecosystems by creating their own ecosystem posters. They will choose one and research the specific aspects of it (weather, life, rainfall, etc.) When they finish they will present with with their peers.
