Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development suggests that children move through four different stages of mental development. :smiley:
Piaget's stages
The Preoperational Stage: Ages: 2 to 7 Years
Children become much more skilled at pretend play during this stage of development, yet continue to think very concretely about the world around them.
That´s why as a teachers we need to consider learner´s abilities and characteristics.
The Concrete Operational Stage Ages: 7 to 11 Years
During this stage, children also become less egocentric and begin to think about how other people might think and feel
Is important take in account the ways how children learn languages.
For example: Context, how teachers beliefs about learning affect their teaching.
Sensorimotor stage: birth to 2 years
During this earliest stage of cognitive development, infants and toddlers acquire knowledge through sensory experiences and manipulating objects.
According to Jayne when children are learning they still making mistakes even if they are learning their first language
Errors give us windows to look through and see what they have discovered about laguage.
The Formal Operational Stage
Ages: 12 and Up
The final stage of Piaget's theory involves an increase in logic, the ability to use deductive reasoning, and an understanding of abstract ideas.
This theory consists on how children acquire knowledge and also understanding the nature of intelligence. :silhouette:
Context for learning English
A real need for English
Use English in order to survive on a daily basis
Variety of input
They are exposed to a wide variety of uses of English
Exposure
They are exposed to English all around them
Meaningful input
They will recive plenty of meaningful language use for communication.
Time
Children will have plenty time for learning English
It is not possible to regress into a previous stage.
Assimilation
The process of taking in new information into our already existing schemas is known as assimilation.
